A bug out bag is something every adult should have prepared for a worst case scenario. Whether a survivalist, worried about major political upheaval, or just wanting to be prepared when caught by surprise, there are many good reasons for always having an updated bag ready to go in both a vehicle and at home. However, not every prep bag is created equal. There are certain bug out bag essentials that no put together bag should be without.
At least one roll of duck tape if not two or three. They tape up relatively little space, provide a waterproof patch, and can be used to make rope, tie lashings, and even help stop bleeding from a gash in a real emergency when there isn’t time for proper treatment. This is an uber-versatile piece of equipment that will come in useful for multiple scenarios.
This can be an either or if space is really at a premium but ideally the best bag will have one of each. A very good fixed blade knife like a Buck Knife, as well as a sharpened hatchet. Having one of each gives the tools for a variety of situations, and these simply are two of the best tools for survival, bushcraft, or camping.
Water Purification Tablets
You need clean drinking water that isn’t going to make you sick. A large stack of water purification tablets goes a long way to making sure you have the most important asset of all: clean drinking water. Make sure to pack a simple water filtration system like a LifeStraw to give two clean water options.
Wood Strike Anywhere Matches
A box or two of these means a lot of fire and that’s never a bad thing. As “easy” as survival shows make it look, starting a fire without matches isn’t easy. Having several hundred fires a match strike away just makes sense.
Braided Fishing Line
Not only is fish a great source of protein, but spooled braided fishing line is incredibly strong, can be used anytime an individual needs rope or lashings, and works to set up good early warning systems around any given camp.
Don’t underestimate the usefulness of a folding cup, a small tin pot, or a fork/spoon dual eating utensil. Hot food is a big psychological pick up but no one is going to be able to take advantage of that if they only have their fingers to eat with.
Small Dollar Bills
One of the most overlooked essential is currency. Too many preppers focus on the big post apocalyptic scenario and don’t spend time to think about any scenario where they need to just get out of town for a while or pick up supplies from Point A to Point B. Having $500 in small bills means having that purchasing ability and not calling attention to themselves by waving around $100 bills.
These are several of the major bug out bag essentials that every individual should look at when putting their bag together. Remember: be like the Scouts, be prepared!
